News

An officer involved shooting and suicide shuts down a portion of U.S. 20 in Rockford.

The incident happened around 11:30am.  Investigators say a Rockford Police officer conducted a traffic stop on a pickup truck, towing what Rockford Police Chief Dan O’Shea described as a camping trailer, in the westbound lanes near Montague.

During the stop, police say the suspect, a white male, pulled out a handgun.  The officer fired several shots.

The gunman wasn’t hit. However, police report the gunman died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

A Rockford Police officer and an Illinois State trooper were taken to the hospital as a precatuion.  Chief O’Shea says neither were injured.

The Winnebago-Boone County Integrity Task Force is investigating the incident.
