Rockford Police roll out new squad cars, designed by officers

The City of Rockford rolled out new squad cars this week, after purchasing 28 Ford Explorers — with completely redesigned graphics — for patrol.

The Rockford Police Department allowed for a team of officers to take charge of the new purchases, inside and out.

Officers wanted a traditional look, with a black and white color scheme. The new graphics are reflective and can be seen even at night, making the squad cars more visible to the public.

“I wanted the officers to have the input on how it looked and how they designed the interior, because it’s their office for 10 hours a day, and we asked them what they think, and they came up with a few different designs,” said Police Chief Dan O’Shea.

The department will eventually phase out all of the old squad cars as more funding becomes available. They also purchased 11 unmarked vehicles.
