Rockford police are making a uniform change for the first time in decades which involves color and insignia modifications.
The new uniforms will be a darker navy blue, part of what the department says has been a national shift towards the color. They say the change to navy blue uniforms offer a more consistent, professional appearance, and the ability to better conceal stains and wear and tear.
All sworn officers will be outfitted the same color regardless of rank, with representation of command staff is indicated by bars or stars on the collar.
The long sleeve uniforms will also include an insignia on the left cuff which represents years of service for each officer. Each hash mark signifies five years of service.
City officials believe the changes will help be a morale boost to officers.
The $40,000 cost of the change comes out of the uniform budget. Officers will be issued three long sleeve and three short sleeve uniforms
