‘Rockford Reads’: Local Program in Need of Volunteers to Help Children Read

News

A local program that benefits Rockford students is seeking volunteers.

The Rockford Rotary Club wants to bring more people on board with the “Rockford Reads’ program. It works with the Rockford Public School District 205 to improve reading among second graders.

Volunteers get the chance to read as little as once a week for about an hour with up to three students. But the program is about more than just strengthening reading skills.

“The bonding between the volunteer and the student is absolutely critical,” explained Bob Presman, Rockford Rotary Club. “The student looks forward to it every week, you become really more of a mentor to that child.”

177 volunteers enrolled last year. Since the program’s inception, more than 3,000 students have benefited. Rockford reads is now looking for volunteers for the second semester. If you’d like to sign up, contact Marsha Sisney with District 205 at (815) 966-3271 or email her at sisneym@rps205.com.
