ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — The American Red Cross of Northern Illinois is asking residents to donate blood by holding a blood drive on Tuesday.
The event will take place from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Red Cross at 727 N Church St.
The organization will also host an open house, educating the community on its services.
Anyone who donates will receive a t-shirt and will be entered into a raffle for gift baskets and other prizes.
Organizers say a shortage prompted the drive.
“We are in a critical need of blood type ‘O’,” said the Red Cross’ Janet Jarvis. “We’re about 11,500 units behind of collecting that blood type. So, we’re encouraging everyone with that blood type, along with all blood types, to come out and donate.”
The Red Cross hopes to collect 50 units of blood during Tuesday’s blood drive, which could help hospitals save 150 patients, they say.
