The Rockford School District may have to pay back the State of Illinois nearly $3 million.

Illinois Department of Revenue officials have determined that the District received too much state money in 2014.  Investigators discovered the error as the state transitioned to a new reporting system.  The City of Rockford also received an extra $915,000 and Winnebago County received more than $620,000.

It’s a mistake that happened in municipalities all across the state.  Spokespeople for the state say they’ll work with local governments and school districts on an extended repayment plan.
