Rockford Theives Target Cars Left Unattended in Winter Weather

As the weather turns colder, Rockford residents who run their cars, unattended, are attracting the attention of local theives.

“It just takes seconds for a would-be thief to jump in and take the car,” said Rockford Police Department Lieutenant Eric Bruno.

“I keep my car running at home, I have to go to work in the morning,” said Rockford resident, Greg Gonzalez. “But that’s the only time.”

Just after 12:30am on Thursday. a Pontiac G-6 was robbed from the driveway at the 2500 block of Wyoming Drive in East Rockford.

Two teenagers were later arrested.

On Wednesday, a Ford Taurus was stolen at the Stop-N-Shop on Huffman Boulevard.

On Tuesday, a Chevrolet HHR was taken from the parking lot at the Hillcrest Animal Hospital on Alpine Road.

“You’ve got hard-working people out here,” says resident Cody Paul “Somebody goes in really quick to get something to drink, has to get a pack of cigarettes, and then boom, their car is gone. It’s like people need to work for what they got and it’s just messed up that you can’t even leave your car running anymore, in Rockford.”

“In a nicer area, people drop their guard a little more, as opposed to if a person may be in a bad neighborhood or something, they’re going to have their guard up,” said Gonzalez.

But area residents have now come to the conclusion that – no matter the neighborhood – crime seems to find its way through.

“I don’t think you’re ever safe anywhere,” said Gonzalez. “I think society has proven that pretty much.”
