Among Illinois cities outside of Chicago, Rockford tied for the most DUI arrests by a law enforcement in the state according to a report released Tuesday. The department’s 470 arrests in 2015 tied it with Carol Stream, and was a nearly 21% increase over 2014.
The Alliance Against Intoxicated Motorists (AAIM) conducted the annual survey, which is funded by a grant from the Illinois Department of Transportation. The group notes that both Rockford and Carol Stream have consistently ranked near the top in overall DUI arrests of the 700 Illinois police agencies surveyed.
“Over the last three decades, progress has been made to help eliminate the devastation caused by impaired driving in Illinois. While frustratingly slow, many lives have been saved,” said Rita Kreslin, Executive Director of AAIM in a statement. “Focused efforts and cooperation of law enforcement agencies, traffic safety advocates and communities have helped to prevent crashes and save thousands of lives.”
The biggest increase in arrests among the top departments was in Peoria, which saw a year-to-year increase of 83.9%.
The sheriff’s department reporting the most DUI arrests was Lake County (367), while Cook (331), Winnebago (278), Will (205) and Champaign (204) Counties round out the top five.
