Rockford Woman Arrested in Deadly Hit and Run Crash in July

Rockford police have made an arrest in a more than four month old hit and run death investigation.

On July 5th at approximately 2:15pm, police were dispatched to the 4000 block of Auburn Street where a pedestrian had been hit by a car while walking in a grassy area north of the street.  58-year-old Marvin King was pronounced dead at the scene.  The driver then fled the scene.

Rockford police conducted an investigation which led to charges being authorized against 39-year-old Jami L. Smith, who was arrested on Thursday.  She faces the following charges:

  • Leaving the Scene of a Fatal Traffic Accident
  • Operating an Uninsured Motor Vehicle
  • Driving while License Suspended

Smith is being held on $500,000 bond.  A booking photo of her was not immediately available.
