A 27-year-old Rockford woman is dead after a fatal crash in unincorporated Union in McHenry County Wednesday night.

Shortly after 9:30 p.m., Marengo and Union firefighters along with the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office responded to the crash in the 17000 block of U.S. Route 176.

A preliminary investigation indicated that a 2005 Honda Civic, driven by the Rockford woman, was traveling westbound when it veered into the oncoming lane and collided with a 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee, driven by a 24-year-old Marengo man.

The driver of the Honda was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Jeep was transported to a local hospital where he’s listed in critical but stable condition.

Both drivers were wearing seatbelts. It’s unclear if alcohol or drugs were factors in the crash, but police say they believe cell phone use was a contributing factor.

The identities of the drivers have not been released. The incident remains under investigation.
