Rockford YWCA Hosts Women’s Rights Advocate, Lilly Ledbetter

The YWCA of Northern Illinois held a luncheon on Monday – with a very special guest.

The organization hosted Congresswoman Cheri Bustos (D-17th District) as well as equal pay advocate Lilly Ledbetter. It’s part of Bustos’ effort to highlight issues facing women.

Bustos says Ledbetter is a trailblazer who has worked to strengthen women’s rights her whole life. Ledbetter was the plaintiff in an employment discrimination lawsuit against Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, in which she sued the company for paying her significantly less than her male counterparts.

“It was her court case that brought to the attention of the American public, that a woman who was doing the exact same work as a man was paid significantly less,” said Bustos.

Women in America make 72¢ on the dollar that a man makes for the same work. That rate is even worse in Winnebago County at 78¢ on the dollar, according to Rep. Bustos.

Six local women received achievement awards at Monday’s event, including Rockford Police Lieutenant Carla Redd for Community Leadership.
