“We thought maybe some animal was hit because we heard a car squealing. He got his shoes on, went down, walked down there, that’s where he see the boy laying there, young boy, very young, 14, dead.”
Phyllis, a resident of Rockton Avenue, describing what her boyfriend saw after a shooting occurred just outside her home on North Rockton Av. and Bruce St. The shooting took the life of fourteen year old Jamario Crawford and wounded a seventeen year old.
“I got a chance to talk to the victim’s grandmother, she was just saying that he was just an amazing child, how he had such a promising future.” Pastor Larry Hamilton II of Second Christian Church was on the scene Friday night and provided support to those close to Crawford. Hamilton also provided advice to those impacted on how to pick up the pieces. “We can’t change what happened, what happened was very traumatic, another byproduct of guns in our neighborhood. Now we have to work on the preventative measurements”.
These measures that Pastor Hamilton and Rockton Avenue resident Donald Gary say involve in the community. “It’s about us as people getting together, its not a one man show, it takes a village to raise a child”, says Gary. “Now we need to work on certain things where we have hubs in the community, Hamilton adds. “It’s not about the violence, its why the violence”
