Police and teachers stand near the front steps of Roosevelt School Wednesday morning; after a student walked into the school with a gun shot wound.“Apparently he was shot in the foot. Upon officers briefly talking to him it was found out that the shooting didn’t happen at the school or on school property,” says Sgt. Dennis Oblinger Rockford Police.
Amy Zuniga dropped her nephew off at the school just before all the commotion.“It’s very scary when you’re in the midst of ten minutes of dropping off your child into a school and then you get a text from your child to come pick him up because there was a school shooting,” says Rockford Parent Amy Zuniga.
Police confirm the student was on his way to school when he was approached by two black males. They said something to him and then shot him. Some students in the area say they’re afraid to step into class. “Makes me not wanting to come to school just stay home and do home school,” says Roosevelt Student Jose Pina.
Pina says earlier this year the school closed for lunch because so many kids were robbed. So the teachers came up with a survey to see how safe they feel in the area. Now they can only leave the property during certain times. “The only parts of the school they let us go out is here in the parking lot and that’s it,” says Pina.
Pina and Zuniga feel the only solution to crimes likes these is more law enforcement patrolling the area. “There’s a lot of gang violence around here. Maybe more police activity around here to make us feel safe,” says Pina.
Roosevelt Alternative High School was briefly placed on lockdown following a shooting in the area.
Police say the juvenile victim is a Roosevelt student who was shot a few blocks away from the school, but entered the school following the incident.
The student says he was approached by two black men around 11:30 a.m. as he was walking near the school, and was then shot in the foot. His injuries are considered non-life-threatening.
RPS sent out the following statement:
Roosevelt is in lockdown as of 11:31 this morning because of police activity near the school, 978 Haskell Ave. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding.
That lockdown has since been lifted.
