Rockford Public Schools will break ground this week at the site of a new school, marking the first new school construction in RPS 205 since 1998.
The new school will replace the existing Cherry Valley, White Swan and Thompson elementary schools.
The community is invited to attend the groundbreaking ceremony. It will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the site of the school, which will be located between Swanson Parkway and Perryville Road, south of Harrison Avenue. Access to the school will be off of Perryville.
Those planning to attend can get there by heading south on Perryville past Harrison. The groundbreaking site will be on the west side of the road; look for construction equipment. Follow a gravel road off of Perryville to a gravel parking lot with RPS 205 signs.
The 86,000 square-foot school will serve students in the Cherry Valley, White Swan and Thompson elementary school attendance zones. The current Cherry Valley Elementary School will be demolished and become property of the Village of Cherry Valley. White Swan and Thompson will also be demolished and become property of the Rockford Park District.
The new school is expected to be ready for students for the start of the 2018-2019 school year.
