‘Run for the Fallen’ event raises awareness and funds for Gold Star families

Hundreds of Stateline residents woke up early Saturday morning for a run to honor our fallen heroes.

The Run for the Fallen, put on by the Gold Star Mission, is a new way the organization is raising awareness and funds for Gold Star families.

The Gold Star Mission started two years ago and held multiple long distance bicycle rides to different parts of illinois in remembrance of fallen service men and women.

David Helfrich, President and Founder of Gold Star Mission, says the non-profit is now expanding to different athletes and runners to expand their mission

“We have 400 people who signed up for the run, which means they brought family members with them and so we have let’s say 800 to 1,000 people that are here and of those 100 people that are here, another 1000 people know about it because they spread the word,” Helfrich said.

The money raised at these events goes toward the Gold Star Mission scholarship fund to make sure family members of people that gave the ultimate sacrifice have the opportunity to go to college.
