A lawsuit filed by opponents of Rockford’s S. New Towne Housing Project has been been thrown out by a judge according to Winnebago County officials.

The lawsuit filed by nearby residents alleged that Rockford City Council had acted illegally in their proceedings when they approved the plat for the public housing project being developed by Gorman and Company.  The plat vote was the final approval needed for Gorman to proceed with the project, many council members voicing their anger at the secretive process towards at which the project was planned and implemented, but saying they had no choice but to approve it.

Nearby residents now fear the public housing project will drive down already depressed housing values in the area.

Construction on the project has already begun, Gorman and Rockford Housing Authority officials moving ahead while confident the lawsuit was without merit.
