Salvation Army encourages students to learn to give to the needy

News

The Salvation Army of Winnebago County began its 50th Annual Food for the Needy Drive on Monday.

Lincoln Middle School, at 1500 Charles Street, hosted the event this afternoon.

Last year, students brought in enough donations to earn the Salvation Army’s “Golden Can” award.

At today’s kick off event, the superintendent’s Student Advisory Council also introduced the school theme for this year: ‘Take a Shot to End Hunger.’

Salvation Army leaders say it’s encouraging to see students give back to the community.

“I think it’s going to be great for them to learn how to give at a young age,” said Major Steve Kouthapanya. “Because we need to teach them how to give at a young age, so when they grow up and, I believe in my heart, that this community will make a difference in the way they’re raised to be.”

The Salvation Army is hoping to raise enough food for more than 3,500 families.
