The Salvation Army of Winnebago County kicks off its 50th annual Food for the Needy Drive today from 2:00 to 2:30 p.m. We are going live this morning from the Salvation Army ahead of the event!

The event will be hosted by the winner of last year’s Golden Can Award, Lincoln Middle School in Rockford, IL.

A Salvation Army representative, will announce this year’s goal for the campaign and present the 2017 “Golden Can” award.

Superintendent Dr. Ehren Jarret will address the volume of donations that are coming through the schools and how students are learning the value of giving not only by helping the community at large but fellow students as well. Wyatt Morris, vice president of the Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council will introduce the 2018 school theme, “Take a Shot To End Hunger,” unveil the theme poster and bring closing remarks.

The Army’s goal is to collect non-perishable food items for more than 3,500 families and individuals
who will register for Christmas food assistance.

Donations will be distributed not only at Christmas but will also sustain the Army’s food pantry through the winter.
