Scammer posing as sheriff’s deputy targeting area residents

phone scam generic

A scammer pretending to be a Rock County sheriff’s deputy is attempting to steal from area residents by demanding money to avoid arrest.

The Rock County Sheriff’s Office reports that the caller is specifically identifying themselves as Sergeant Egger. They claim the person called has warrants for their arrest and that they need to purchase a prepaid money card and provide the card’s numbers and expiration date in order for the warrants to expire.

The Sheriff’s Office is reminding residents that they would never notify them of a warrant for their arrest via phone, nor do they take payments over the phone.

Anyone who has received a similar call is asked to report it by calling 608-757-2244.
