The Department of the Treasury says it’s witnessed a rise in the number of people around Rockford reporting calls from scammers claiming to be from the Department.
Officials are warning that the scammers usually say they’re from the “Department of Legal Affairs,” and offer to grant money in exchange for wiring a small payment. Some have threatened arrest unless payment is made. To add legitimacy to their claims, the callers sometimes provide a fake badge/employee number, claim that formal documents have been mailed in the past or transfer calls to “supervisors” that are also involved in the scam.
The callers also use technology to “spoof” telephone numbers that appear to be coming from Washington, DC or even display government agency caller IDs.
Individuals should not provide personal information or payment to these callers and are advised to hang up the phone and block further calls if possible.
If you have received a call from an individual claiming to be a Department of the Treasury employee that you suspect is fraudulent, report it to OIGCounsel@oig.treas.gov or call (202) 927-0650.
