The Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office has received reports of people getting phone calls from individuals posing as high ranking officials with the Sheriff’s Office or U.S. Attorney’s Office in Rockford.
They are warning that these calls are a scam.
The callers claim that there is a warrant for the recipients arrest for failure to appear at Grand Jury. The citizens are then instructed to call an 800 number to transfer money for bond payment.
In one instance, a man used his credit card to transfer $2,400 to an office in Georgia.
Neither the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office or the U.S. Attorney’s Office calls citizens and demands bond payments for failure to appear before a Grand Jury.
Anyone who receives a similar call is asked to immediately report it to the Sheriff’s Office at (815) 319-6317.
