Fire departments rushed to contain a 40-acre brush fire after it spread from a fully engulfed semi-trailer burning on I-88 on Tuesday afternoon.

Around 1:45 p.m., multiple fire departments were dispatched to Mile Marker 93 near DeKalb on I-88 for the report of a semi on fire. Although there were no hazardous materials in the tractor-trailer, which was carrying glass and plastic items, the fire managed to spread to the brush and grass on the North side of the highway.

Due to high winds and the dry condition of the grass, the fire rapidly expanded and burned 40-acres before the fire crews were able to extinguish it two hours later.

No structures were threatened by the fire and no one was hurt.

The fire is estimated to have caused $130,000 in damages. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
