Senator Dick Durbin (D-Illinois) is calling for congressional hearings after the massive data breach at credit rating company Equifax.

As many as 140 million Americans may have had their information compromised. Durbin sits on the Senate Finance Committee. Members want Equifax to answer their questions by September 28.

Senator Durbin says the breach may reveal a need to regulate credit agencies better.

“The fact is the government has to step in and make sure that our identity, our personal information is being protected,” said Durbin. “These companies want to make a profit with this info, all well and good, but at the same time, they have a responsibility to the nation to handle this information properly.”

Durbin wants to know details about the company’s cyber security standards, and when the Equifax board and executives were notified about the breach. Some executives reportedly sold stock before the breach was announced.
