Several stateline residents found themselves amid the gunfire that rang out Sunday night in Las Vegas, where at least 58 people were confirmed killed in the shooting at a country music concert outside the Mandalay Bay resort on the Vegas strip.

Ben and Ashley Lipnitzky, Machesney Park residents, were among them. They were not injured, but their friend, only identified as a man also from Machesney Park, was shot in the leg. He’s expected to be okay.

Ashley Lipnitzky told Eyewitness News that she and her husband are now trying to catch the first flight back to Illinois to reunite with their children.

“My worst nightmare came true,” said Lipnitzky in a Facebook post. “Thank God Ben and I are alive. Thank you all for thinking of us, please pray for safe travels back home. At this point, I don’t feel safe until I am home with my babies and husband…We are ok!”

As of Monday afternoon, authorities in Las Vegas had confirmed 58 fatalities in the shooting, and more than 500 others injured.
