Severe Weather Leaves Stateline Flooded

News

After last night’s storms, the rain it left behind caused widespread flooding.

High waters, strong winds and inches of rain made traveling a challenge.  The Rockford Police Department reported six incidents where drivers were trapped in their cars. Motorists tried to drive through flood waters causing the engine to stall.  However, there were others that were able to get out.  Officers say they saw more than a dozen stranded vehicles throughout the area.
Rockford Police Lt. John Pozzi says if it weren’t for their high clearance vehicles like MRAPs and their SUVs, those stranded passengers could have been stuck in their cars for a long time.

“MRAP of course was used to go into our more dangerous areas and of course make a variety of rescues,” said Lt. Pozzi.

He says its just their job to use their resources to help those who need it and are in distress.

“People get into almost instantaneously panic sets in, they call us,” said Lt. Pozzi. “It’s imperative that we have a vehicle like that to get to them as quick as possible.”

As the road to recovery begins, clean-up crews remove trees that were sliced apart by whipping winds and lightning.  Drivers in the Menard’s parking lot in Machesney Park were still trying to navigate through the high waters. There were some, like Akio Kaku, who were taken aback by what they had seen.

“We have typhoons in japan, but nothing like this..I’ve never seen before.”

Akio Kaku is visiting the Stateline from Japan.  He says the rapid pace of the storm caught him off guard.

“About 3pm, it was still ok. But, at night, I’ve never seen something like this before,” said Kaku. “So, I’m surprised.”

Rockford officials say residents should to be mindful of the outside conditions and plan trips accordingly to avoid getting yourself stuck in high waters.
