Sexual Assault Case Against School Bus Driver Begins

News

The trial began Tuesday for a former school bus driver accused of inappropriately touching two five year-old girls.

Attorneys delivered their opening statements in the case of 68 year-old Peter Sanchez.  The former Prairie Hill school bus driver is charged with five counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse.  Prosecutors say the incidents happened on the bus before school.

“You will also hear that [Sanchez] gave a written statement to police admitting doing this… and you will hear evidence that [Sanchez] also touched another little girl on the bus,” said the prosecutor.

But, the defense argues there was nothing sexual about what Sanchez did.

“He was not touching these kids with anything sexual in mind,” said Sanchez’s attorney.  “He was simply trying to tend to these children, as he was tasked to do.”

Both attorneys say there are video and audio recordings from the bus, which back up their case.  Sanchez could spend as long as 35 years behind bars if convicted.
