Have you ever wanted to know just how much air is in a bag of chips? A new study has shown that 43% of the volume of an average bag of potato chips is air.

Or, more accurately, nitrogen, since oxygen would make the chips go stale in the bag.

Manufacturers inflate the chip bags with nitrogen to provide a “chip cushion” to keep them intact as they are moved during transit.

Kitchen Cabinet Kings tested 14 name brand potato chips to measure the air to chip ratio in each bag, using a water displacement method, and crunched the numbers.

The study determined that Fritos (19% nitrogen), Pringles (28% nitrogen) and Tostitos (34% nitrogen) offer consumers the best bang for their buck.

In some cases, like Cheetos, the bag contained 59% nitrogen.
