Squad car stands as memorial for fallen Deputy Jake Keltner

A McHenry County Sheriff’s squad car is serving as a memorial for fallen Deputy Jacob Keltner, a solemn reminder for the community of Woodstock.

Although the car on display outside of the McHenry County Government Center, at 2200 N Seminary Avenue, is not Deputy Keltner’s official squad car, the McHenry County Sheriff’s Department says it honors their hero.

Black ribbons circle the car, along with a few bouquets of flowers which have been placed on it by passers by.

A phrase, written on the bumper, says “Blessed are the peacemakers.”

Nancy McCoy, whose family has lived in Woodstock for the past 4 generations, says everyone is devastated, and people like Keltner are assets in their lives.

“It shouldn’t have happened,” McCoy said. “It just reallly shouldn’t have happened, because we need people like him in our lives, rather than the people they were trying to get and keep us safe from.”

The car will be used during Keltner’s funeral this week, but will return back to the McHenry County Government Center as a memorial, afterwards.
