Thurgood Marshall School hosted a farewell ceremony Friday for students and families to say goodbye to nearly 40 Chinese students who have been visiting the city over the past two weeks.
The students immersed themselves in American culture and got to experience “warm” winter days.
Organizers say the program helps students better understand the diversity of the world.
“Our kids are really used to looking around their classrooms and seeing different skin colors, but it’s really important for them to understand that culture is about art and music, and they’re Rockfordians, and that’s its own culture, despite what their skin color is,” said Maggie Kasicki, the International Club Leader for Rockford and Harlem schools.
Montessori, Marshall, Auburn and Harlem Middle School all took part in the program.
