UPDATE – Rockford Police say the suspect fired a shot into the ceiling of the bank, then opened fire on an armed security guard.  The guard is employed by the bank.  The guard then fired back, killing the suspect.  No customers were inside the bank when the shooting happened and no workers were hurt.  For now, police are treating this case as a homicide.

An eastside Rockford bank robbery attempt has ended with the suspect being shot.

Police confirm they are on the scene of the robbery attempt at the Alpine Bank in the 2200 block of Mulford. Details remain limited, but after initial reports of shots fired, police have confirmed the suspect is the shooting victim.
