Police are searching for two suspects after they flee police, crash their car, and then steal another car with the victim still inside.
Police say it all began when Winnebago Sheriff’s Deputies tried to pull the suspects over in their Mercury Marquee on Rockford’s west side.
“They had information that (the car) had been involved in some recent criminal activity, both in the city of Rockford and some cases that the Sheriff’s Department has,” said Rockford Police Dep. Chief Pat Hoey.
That’s when Hoey says the suspects took off, leading deputies across the 15th Ave. bridge, over onto Broadway, and finally onto 20th street — where a woman t-boned them in front of the Walgreen’s at 20th St. and Charles St. The impact sending the Marquee spinning up onto the curb, where it burst into flames.
“Two black males suspects got out, approached one vehicle in the parking lot, and tried to get into their vehicle,” said Hoey.
Witnesses say that first carjacking attempt failed, so the suspects forced their way into a gray Dodge Durango instead, with the owner still inside.
A short time later, the victim called police, and the Durango was recovered near Cherryvale Mall. However, police are still searching for the suspects.
“Right now we’re looking for two black males,” said Hoey. “We’re getting different reports, that at least one was armed with a handgun, some say they didn’t see that.”
Police urge anyone who may know the whereabouts of the two suspects to contact them or Crimestoppers.
