The Winnebago County Health Department has issued an alert, following a similar notice issued Friday by the Illinois Department of Public Health, that synthetic drugs are causing severe bleeding across the state.
Since March 10th, users of the synthetic cannabinoid K2 (aka fake weed, Mind Trip, and spice) in northeastern Illinois have reported cases of severe bleeding. Poison Control has identified that the drugs may be laced with a highly potent rat poison.
Currently, no cases have been reported in Winnebago County.
The synthetic cannabinoids are often viewed as a legal and safe alternative to marijuana, however, many are illegal and can cause severe illness.
Anyone who has a serious reaction to the drug is urged to call 911 immediately.
