Investigators are looking into what killed off thousands of fish in a central Illinois lake.
It happened near Loda, in Lake Iroquois. The state EPA says water sample results should be available later this week. Some of their theories include something entering the lake from a river, or lake turnover lowering oxygen levels in the water. Each of those would have essentially suffocated the fish.
Conservation police say a fish kill like this is devastating to the lake’s ecosystem.
Shad, yellow bass, catfish, carp and walleye have all died.
