Police say a 3-year-old boy was killed and his 2-year-old sister was critically injured after they were hit by a freight train on Tuesday.

According to WGN, the boy, identified as Caleb Wilson, and his sister had snuck out of a screen door of their mobile home and made their way to the tracks.

The conductor told police that he blew the horn when he saw the children on the tracks but was unable to stop the train.

The first officer on-scene found the boy had been killed and his sister was injured but crying. She was airlifted to Comers Children’s Hospital.

“This tragedy undeniably affected the first responders as several were visibly shaken by what occurred but worked through those emotions to provide every possible resource and effort throughout the entire incident,” Portage Police Chief Williams told WGN.
