Toddler’s rendition of the national anthem goes viral

A video of a three-year-old boy singing the National Anthem at a minor league baseball game in Cayuga County is gaining steam and on Friday was played on CBS This Morning.

Drake Grillo of Auburn on Wednesday sang the Star Spangled Banner at the start of Wednesday’s ballgame between the Auburn Doubledays and the Lowell (Massachusetts) Spinners.

Chelsea Grillo kneeled next to her son and fed him several lines.

But Drake, a huge sports fan who loves to play and watch all sorts of sports, knew most of the anthem’s words as he belted out the well-known tune.

“There were a few questionable words in there,” Grillo said with a laugh. “We just didn’t know how it would go….Drake started singing it in the winter and will randomly sing it off and on during the day.”

Before Wednesday’s game, the team’s assistant general manager Shane Truman asked Drake if he wanted to sing and Drake said he did, Grillo said.

Grillo, Drake, and Truman together gathered on the field, and Truman was prepared to sing along if needed, Grillo said.

The family, she said, are season ticketholders and longtime supporters of the Auburn Doubleday team.

Drake and his performance were an instant hit, leading to many high fives and congratulatory fist bumps throughout the night, Grillo said.

Grillo said she hadn’t realized that Truman had recorded her son’s performance until he posted it on Facebook the following day.

Drake is scheduled to sing the National Anthem again at a fundraiser for hip displasia at Falcon Park on July 29. Chelsea and Brendan Grillo’s 17-month-old daughter Saylor has suffered from hip displasia, and has had surgery and worn several different casts to correct her hip instability. Funds raised at the event will support a program at Golisano Children’s Hospital at Strong Memorial Hospital to purchase more specially-designed chairs and car seats to be loaned to children with hip displasia, Grillo said.

While Drake hit a homerun with his performance, the Auburn team lost to Lowell Wednesday night (6-4) and again on Thursday (6-1). The teams face off again Friday evening at Auburn’s Falcon Park.
