Train cars derail near Oregon in bizarre Ogle County accident

The Ogle County Sheriff’s Office says 17 empty train cars that were stored near Oregon suddenly began moving Saturday night and derailed into the roadway.

Police say they were called to the scene, just west of the intersection of Pines Road and West Devil’s Backbone Road, around 9:50 p.m.

Train cars, without a locomotive, were being stored on a portion of the track between Gale Road and Oregon Trail.

Police say, for an as of yet undiscovered reason, the rail cars began moving southeast toward Pines Road and struck a derailing device, causing 17 of the 99 cars to come off the tracks. One car damaged a ComEd power pole.

Police say the cars came to a rest on Pines Road and the north ditch.

Pines Road is expected to be closed all day Sunday.
