A favor to two strangers ends badly for a Rockford man over the weekend.

A victim gave a ride to two women from a parking lot in the 6300 block of E. State Street Saturday night. When he arrived to their destination, in the area of Broadway and 6th Street, he stepped out of the vehicle and the two women took off in his car.

As police investigated, an officer located the stolen car and began following it. After a short distance, it began to accelerate before turning down a dead end street and hitting a utility pole.

The driver, Amber Brannan, 29, of Rockford was taken into custody at the crash scene. A passenger fled on foot. Officers located that passenger, identified as Kahyal Merrills, 24, of Rockford, hiding in a drainage ditch. A second female was never located.

During a follow up investigation, police uncovered a stolen gun on Merrills and drugs inside the vehicle.

Brannan is charged with aggravated driving while revoked, reckless driving and possession of cocaine. Merrills faces charges of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon by a felon, aggravated unlawful use of weapons, two counts of stolen property and resisting an officer.
