Two people injured in accident involving RMTD bus

News

One person was taken by stretcher, another injured, in a car versus Rockford Mass Transit District bus accident Tuesday morning near Harlem Road.

The crash happened around 6:30 a.m. at the intersection of Victory Lane and Old Harlem Road, just north of Bauer Parkway in Machesney Park. The westbound lanes of Old Harlem were closed off as Winnebago County Sheriff’s deputies investigated, they have since reopened.

Police say the bus was headed southbound on Victory when it attempted to make a left turn onto Old Harlem, cutting in front of the Dodge that was westbound on Old Harlem.

The Dodge had heavy front end damage with airbags deployed. An extrication was requested to remove the driver from the vehicle. That driver suffered injuries described as “not life-threatening.”

There were five people on the RMTD bus, which had minor damage. One of those passengers was transported to a local hospital.

Motorists are encouraged to avoid the area as officers investigate and clean up the scene.
