Two people killed by tree at Rock Island’s fireworks celebration


UPDATE: A large tree branch fell on a crowd as fireworks were going off at the county courthouse in Rock Island on Tuesday night. Two people were killed and several others were hurt.

According to witnesses, an 45 foot long branch fell 25 feet to the ground, without warning.

Some people who were sitting underneath the tree were able to get out of the way, but others were trapped underneath.

Daniel Mendoza, 61, of Rock Island, was pronounced dead at the scene. Lawrence Anderson, 72, of Moline, was taken to a hospital where he later died.

A pregnant female, a couple and their two-year-old son, a 3-year-old boy, and another woman were treated for injuries.
