Two teens arrested after Rockford officers pelted with skates, food at SkateCo

News

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — Two teenage girls were arrested after police say more than 100 kids surrounded and threw objects at Rockford Police officers Friday night.

Police said they were called to SkateCo, at 3209 N Main Street, where two girls got into a fight. As officers were trying to separate them, another girl allegedly tried to pull the officer away from the suspect.

Police say teens then surrounded the officers and threw food, soda, and skates at them.

The officers called for backup and regained control of the scene and arrested the two juveniles.

Assistant Deputy Chief Andre Brass said the officers handled the situation as they were trained to do.

“We want our officers to be in control and take control of the situation,” Brass said. “They can’t do that unless they take control of themselves. So, we tell them just to calm down, and get to the call, assess the situation, see what’s going on, and take action from there.”

The two girls, ages 13 and 16, were charged with aggravated battery to police and resisting arrest. They were then released to their guardians.
