Two Winnebago County Sheriffs Deputies Injured Trying to Stop Target Theft

Two deputies were injured while trying to stop a man suspected of retail theft.

The incident happened at the Target on Alpine Road in Machesney Park on Friday.

The Winnebago County Sheriffs Deputies responded to the call just before 1:30 p.m. and located a man, who matched match the suspect description in the parking lot of Target. 

Deputies attempted to detain Evan Christo, 21.  Christo resisted and began running though the parking lot and into a vehicle.  Christo fought the deputies causing one of them to use a taser on him, he then tried to remove the wire from the taser.  Eventually he was taken into custody, after being treated for injuries.  Christo now faces charges of retail theft, aggravated battery to an officer, possession of a hypodermic needle, and resisiting arrest.

The deputies were treated and released.
