U.S Coast Guard Academy names field house after first African American head coach

The U.S. Coast Guard Academy honors a Rockford trailblazer. The Academy named an athletic field house after Doctor Hallie Gregory.

Gregory was the school’s first African American head track and basketball coach. He also taught there.

His family was on hand for a ribbon cutting ceremony Wednesday. Gregory died back in 2017.

The school says the former coach embodied the words “Strive to Excel, Foster Unity, Instill Respect.”

Gregory is a Rockford native and was the first black teacher at Guilford High School.
