The United Way of the Rock River Valley celebrated Dr. King’s birthday by recognizing the community’s labor movement.
Rockford United Labor presented a $10,000 check to the non-profit Monday. The money was raised during last September’s Labor Day Picnic. Officials say the presentation is a reminder that the labor movement and Civil Rights Movement share a common vision of a society free from inequality.
“The theme of the event is, ‘We Are One,'” said United Way Labor Engagement Manager Gina Meeks. “I think that collaborates very well with the message that Martin Luther King was saying at that point. We just really wanted to make that tie-in to say that the labor movement and Civil Rights Movement were one.”
The money will be used to fund United Way initiatives, such as the Strong Neighborhood House and other educational programs.
