UPDATE (12/17/15): The teenager killed on Concord Avenue Wednesday has been identified. He is Reginald Safford, 17, of Rockford.
Yellow tape still drapes the 600 block of concord Avenue where 17- year- old Reginald Safford was gunned down Wednesday evening.
Safford died at the hospital after being shot in the neck. No arrests have been made, and police keeping tight-lipped for now on their investigation. “We’re going to focus our resources there and we’re going to work to identify the people who are engaging in it and we’re going to get them locked up,” says Assistant Deputy Doug Pann.
Deputy Chief Doug Pann says after a shooting happens in one area, there’ll be another shooting on the other side for retaliation, and that makes it tough for investigators. “If it goes back in forth Often times the people who are involved are not willing to cooperate with us and it’s difficult to put together a case,” says Pann. “Used to be you could walk around here safely now you can barely do it at seven o clock or six in the morning,” says Concord Resident Curtis Simmons.
Longtime resident Curtis Simmons told us from the scene of the shooting that he blames gangs and teens for the surge of violence in the community. “The gun thing over here is really off the hook. I’ve seen children displaying weapons,” says Simmons.
And Pann adds that there all no bad neighborhoods, just bad people who make communities less safe. “It usually attributed to one person or a small group of people. The neighbors are frustrated. The neighbors may be in fear,” says Pann.
The initial autopsy revealed he died as a result of multiple gunshot wounds. No arrests have been made.
An investigation is ongoing.
The 17-year-old male shot on Concord Ave. has died. The victim’s aunt Sonya Marshall rushed to the scene when she found out her nephew was killed.
“I don’t know what happened, or if he was with the wrong crowd or what. He would just come out here, and visit my son sometimes. He had not even made it inside the house yet, so I don’t know if someone was following him, or (if) he got into (a fight) with somebody or what”
This is the second family member marshal has lost to gun violence within the past year. Her niece, 15 year old Jazznique Fort was killed in a drive by back in January.
She says, “This just like the second time we done been through this you know, so it’s just really kind of hard.”
Neighbors say they heard as many as 8 gunshots during the shooting. Resident Curtis Simmons adds, Around here,(shootings are) starting to be a constant thing now. You start to hear gunshots all the time. All the children around here walk around with guns.”
