UPDATE: Investigators identified the victim as Eddie Lee Jones, 28.

UPDATE:  A convicted felon has been arrested on murder charges following a shooting early Sunday morning.

Police say witnesses had identified the shooter as 32-year-old Beloit resident Barquis Odom.  Officers spotted Odom in a car on the city’s west side, pulled him over and took him into custody without incident at around 9:15pm Sunday night.

Odom is being held at the Rock County Jail pending his initial court appearance on charges of First Degree Intentional Homicide and Possession of a Firearm by a Felon.

Crime scene tape wrapped around a Janesville home on Franklin street where a man was shot dead on Sunday. Police received reports of shots fired coming in just after midnight. Janesville Police Chief David Moore said police found the victim in serious condition.

“The officers found that there was trauma about this victim’s face and neck,” said Chief Moore.

The victim has been identified as a 29 year-old man from Cook County.  Police say he also has an extensive criminal history. Officials found that he was in possession of cocaine and heroin. Shell casings and unspent rounds were also discovered in the back of the home.

Janesville police saying the incident began as an argument that turned fatal.

“A male was heard challenging another person to ‘get out of the f-ing house, lets settle this’…. then shots were fired.” said Chief Moore.

A resident who did not want to be identified said she was alarmed when she heard the gun shots across the street from her home.

“I was sitting at my kitchen table and watching a movie….I heard gun shots.”
She has lived in the neighborhood for 25 years and says suspicious activity is not uncommon on her block.

“I came out here. I heard the paramedics come, the sirens and I knew it was that corner house down there.” said the Resident. “She always has people coming in and out all day long over there.”
