UPDATE (6:30pm) – The scene has cleared.
Rockford Police are on the scene of a serious car crash on the Whitman Street Bridge.
This happened just before 4pm. A black Chrysler Pacifica was stopped on the bridge because it ran out of gas, backing up traffic.
A gold Buick behind the Chrysler was rear ended by a burgundy Volkswagen. The momentum from that crash forced the Buick to crash into a silver Chevy envoy.
The Buick’s driver was taken to a hospital and is expected to be ok. The envoy’s driver did not need medical attention.
Two adults and two kids were in the Volkswagen. The children were taken to a hospital with non life threatening injuries.
