This was the scene Tuesday night after 15-year old Lavontay Allen was shot to death in the area of Central and Preston on Rockford’s west side.
Officials said he was a passenger in a car being driven by his mom when witnesses say gunmen drove up and started firing.
“He was riding with his mom and they were towards Central and Preston, they did stop at some stop lights and their vehicle was shot at,” said Winnebago County Coroner Bill Hintz. “The mother was driving and she ended up driving to Mercy Health.”
Allen died at the hospital despite doctors’ efforts to save his life.
“He wasn’t breathing, he didn’t have pulses. They did everything they could with the emergency room staff, the trauma surgeons-everyone that was there- and they were unable to revive him,” said Hintz.
Allen was a basketball and football player at Auburn High School.
His Facebook page also included a photo of him with his mother.
Neighborhood resident Tonia Munz said she was shocked the young man’s life was taken at this intersection.
“I was in shock because I walk this neighborhood every day and I was feeling safe but now I don’t feel safe,” said Munz.
The 15-year-old is just the latest of what has been several teen murder victims in Rockford this year.
“We’ve had multiple cases where we have had individuals that are juveniles that have been victims of gunshot wounds and things of that nature so it is an issue and we are definitely working on it continuously, trying to address the problems that we see that are rising in the community,” said Assistant Deputy Chief of the Rockford Police Department Carla Redd.
“They need to do something about these guns, how these teens are getting them,” said Munz.
Allen’s mother was treated for a non-life threatening wound.
The shooting death still under investigation. Anyone with more information regarding the case is asked to call Rockford Police or Crimestoppers.
