UPDATE: Mall Shooting Victim Identified

UPDATE: The Winnebago County Coroner identifies the man who was shot and killed outside of the CherryVale Mall Friday afternoon.

31 year old Ricky Smith of Dekalb is said to have been shot in an SUV near the Macy’s entrance on the south side of the shopping center. An autopsy is pending, and toxicology tests will be available in a few weeks.

One man is dead after a deadly shooting outside CherryVale Mall, near the entrance to Macy’s on the south side of the mall.

Around 4:30pm on Friday, Cherry Valley Firefighters were the first responders to arrive, where they found a wounded victim inside a navy blue Hyundai SUV.

“Cherry Valley firefighters pronounced him deceased at the scene,” said Cherry Valley Police Chief Robert Swank.

Cherry Valley Police and the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Department are working together to find out what happened. 

“They are interviewing [the other person who] was in the car,” said Winnebago County Sheriff Gary Caruana, to discover how many people were involved in the shooting. “The way the [suspect] vehicle was traveling, [we’re] pretty sure he’s not in the area,” he added.

The CherryVale Mall did not go on a lockdown and remained open.

UPDATE (5:45pm):  Police have confirmed that the person shot at Cherryvale Mall has died.

UPDATE (5:35pm):  Winnebago County Sheriff Gary Caruana has just finished a media briefing regarding a shooting at Cherryvale Mall.

It happened around 4:15pm, Cherry Valley Police received a call of a shooting on the south side of the mall grounds near Macy’s.  Upon arrival, they found one man who had been shot, but Caruana says he does not know the man’s condition at this time.

Investigators are focusing on a vehicle which is stopped on a curb near an entrance to the mall.  Police dogs are in the area searching for evidence.

No arrests have been made.

Authorities are responding to a shooting at CherryVale Mall.

Police scanner traffic indicting there is at least one victim. It’s not clear if the shooting happened inside or outside the mall. Police were looking for a dark colored SUV reportedly seen outside Macy’s.
