Rockford Police have released new information on the deadly rollover crash late Thursday night, including news of an arrest.
Rockford Police Department officers responded to the intersection of 9th Street and 18th Avenue for a report of a rollover traffic crash just before midnight, and found a blue GMC Jimmy on its side just north of the intersection, and a gold Toyota Corrolla several yards north of the intersection with heavy driver’s side damage.
A passenger in the SUV, 24-year-old Michael Henderson was ejected and pronounced dead at the scene.
The GMC’s drivers, 21-year-old Sanjoe Douangchampa of Rockford, and 22-year-old passenger Kyle Murphy of Rockford were both transported to a nearby hospital with non-life threatening injuries. A fourth passenger, Eric Fletcher, whose age was not released, was not hurt.
26-year-old Sara Rasheed was driving the Toyota, and was also transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Investigators concluded that the GMC had been traveling northbound on 9th Street prior to the crash, failed to yield at the intersection, and t-boned the Toyota in the intersection. They also allege Douangchampa was driving drunk.
Douangchampa has been jailed for Aggravated Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol Involving Death, Aggravated Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol Involving Injury, Driving While Revoked, Disobeying a Traffic Control Device, and Failure to Reduce Speed to Avoid a Collision.
