UPDATE:  The 86-year-old man who died, after being hit by a car in a Wal-Mart parking lot, died from a heart condition.

The Winnebago County Coroner says that Robert Kreneck died from “Traumatic Cardiac Arrhythmia with severe Coronary Artery Disease,” indicating the impact with the car sent him into cardiac arrest.

UPDATE:  Rockford Police say an 86-year-old man hit by a car in the Wal-Mart parking lot has died.

Their preliminary investigation revealed he was walking in one of the parking lot aisles, toward the store, when he was struck by a Chrysler 200, which was backing out of parking stall.  The victim fell to the pavement, hit his head, causing a fatal injury.  His name has not yet been released.

The Rockford Police Traffic Unit will be reconstructing the accident and a small portion of the parking lot will be blocked off until that is complete.  Once the investigation is complete it will be reviewed by the Winnebago County State’s Attorney’s Office.

An initial report that this may be a hit and run crash appear to be incorrect.

A pedestrian is reported to have life threatening injuries after being hit by a vehicle in a Wal-Mart parking lot.

It happened at around 3:30pm at the store near the intersection of Alpine and Riverside roads.

A portion of the parking lot has been roped off with crime scene, although the store had remained open.  A tweet by the Rockford Police Department indicated the victim’s injuries are life-threatening, but no other details are available at this time.

Unconfirmed reports indicate this is being investigated as a hit-and-run crash.
